This TIF White Paper provides guidance on alternative analysis methods that can be utilized for foundation analysis and design. The installation and modification of telecommunication foundations are a substantial financial commitment for industry stakeholders.  Therefore, in some cases additional engineering effort may be warranted to minimize the financial impact to all stakeholders.  Specifically, this paper recommends the following:

  • Utilizing performance-based analysis that considers the impact of foundation deflection on the supported tower in lieu of using methods with simplifying rigid assumptions
  • Eliminating the 1/phi (1.33) increase on factored reactions when a performance-based analysis considers the impact of foundation deflections on the supported tower
  • Coordination with Geotechnical engineers to ensure that p-y curves used in the analysis are appropriate for the conditions at the site
